When winning, there must be 16 tiles in your hands and 1 waiting tile.

**When you have 3 of the same tiles from the same group, it is known as "刻子"

If you want to learn mahjong, you must first recognize the 144 tiles

in mahjong. 1 set of mahjong includes:

"筒子" (circles),

"条子（索子）" (bamboos),

"万子" (thousands) and

the "字牌" which includes "东", "南", "西", "北", "白板", "红中" and "发".

There are 4 of the same tile, as seen from de above pictures.

Also, Taiwan mahjong has 8 flower tiles:

The 4 flowers - "梅", "兰", "菊" and "竹" and

the 4 seasons - "春", "夏", "秋" and "冬".

Each flower tile has a number representing it and

each player also has a number representing them.

When one gets a flower tile that has his/her number, one gets 1台. (花牌*)



The banker (庄家) is the the east wind; 东风

The person on the right side of the banker is the north wind; 南风

The person opposite the banker is the west wind; 西风

And lastly, the person to the left of the banker is the south wind; 北风

These winds allows the players to score with the respective "字牌"s. (风牌*)



When starting the game, the banker gets 17 tiles while the others get 16 tiles.

The banker starts by discarding a tile that he/she does not want.

Then the person sitting to the right of the banker will take a tile from a pile

and discard a tile that he/she does not want.

This action continues on with the person sitting on the right of whoever that

has taken and discarded a tile out.

When one has a "对子" in his/her hand and another player has discarded the same tile,

one can call out "碰" and take that tile and put the 3 tiles out.

One will continue the game by discarding a tile and the person to the right will continue.

When one has a "刻子" in his/her hand and another player has discarded the same tile,

one can call out "杠" and take that tile and put the 4 tiles out.

One will continue the game by taking a tile and discard a tile and

the person to the right will continue. (Note the difference of the underlined parts.)

When one wants to have consecutive tiles and has 2 of the consecutive tiles in his/her hands,

for example, 3bamboo and 4 bamboo (waiting for 2 bamboo or 5 bamboo)

OR

3 bamboo and 5 bamboo (waiting for 4 bamboo).

If the player to the left discards out the tile that one is waiting for,

one can take the tile and put out the 3 consecutive tiles out.

One will continue the game by discarding a tile and the person to the right will continue.

This is called "吃".

However, one can only "吃" the tiles of the person sitting to the left of one.

When one wins, it is called "胡".

And will calculate the score of the winner's tiles.



There are many ways to score for mahjong.

连庄 - 1 台

自摸 - 1 台

风牌* - 1 台

花牌* - 1 台

三元牌 - 1 台

杠上开花 - 1 台

三暗刻 - 2 台

全求 - 2 台

春夏秋冬 - 2 台

梅兰菊竹 - 2 台

门清自摸 - 3 台

碰碰胡 - 4 台

小三元 - 4 台

混一色 - 4 台

清一色 - 8台

大三元 - 8 台

小四喜 - 8 台

八仙过海 - 8 台

七抢一 - 8 台

大四喜 - 16 台

天胡 - 24 台

When one has 1 tile missing, it is known as "small husband" 小相公

And when one has 1 extra tile, it is known as "big husband" 大相公

When there are no more tiles to take and there is no winner, the game will become 留局，

which will start a new round, with no winner for that round.



The first round of the game is called 东风东局

The second round is 东风南局

The third round is 东风西局

The forth round is 东风北局

The fifth round is 南风东局，

and so on…………. untill 北风北局.

From 东风东局 to 北风北局, there are 16 rounds.

And the percentage of winning 1 round is 25%, as there are 4 players

If you have won this round, the percentage of winning the next round is also 25%.

Thus the percentage of winning 16 rounds is 25%.



The below percentages are rounded off.

There are 144 tiles.

There are 8 flowers.

The percentage of getting a flower is 6%

There are 16 东南西北 in total.

The percentage of getting them is 11%

There are 12 白板 红中 青发 in total.

The percentage of getting them is 8%

If you are going to win and you are waiting for 1 tile.

The percentage of getting that one tile is 3%

If you are waiting for 2 tiles, the percentage of getting them is 6%

If you are waiting for 3 tiles (that’s the maximum number of tiles you can wait),

the percentage of getting them is 8%

The percentage for you getting a 八仙过海 is 6%

The percentage for getting 清一色 is 25%.

The percentage for getting 混一色 is 44%

The percentage for getting 大三元 is 8%

The percentage for getting 大四喜 is 11%

The percentage for getting 平胡 is 75%

The percentage for getting 全求 is 2%

The percentage for getting 七抢一 is 5%

The percentage for getting a 抢杠 is 1%

And finally, the percentage of getting a 风牌 is 2-3%
